It all started in a small kitchen in Brooklyn with an IDEA to expand the conversation around Indian food in America to include achaar, a beloved and staple South Asian condiment and a QUESTION of how to create space for a new culinary perspective, authentic to us.
Indian. American. Brooklyn.
Our story is one of identity, flavor, connection, and, of course, love...
Meet Chitra and Ben. A cookbook author and an artist doing more than just making sauces: they were bridging cultures by connecting people to real Indian flavors, first at markets across NYC and now at grocery stores nationwide.
How It Began
Chitra's parents left India in 1967 to pursue the American dream and to give the next generation access to opportunities they never had.
Growing up as a first-generation Indian American, Chitra straddled two worlds, one with her classmates at school and the other deeply entrenched in Indian culture at home.
From a young age Chitra visited India and got to experience the country and its cuisine through her parents - this is her drinking coconut water from a tender coconut for the first time.
In 2009 while living in Brooklyn, Chitra started to document her family's recipes on a blog which led her to reclaim her heritage and explore her Indian-American identity through the lens of food.
Chitra started teaching cooking classes, collaborating with local farmers and chefs to host pop up dinners and eventually wrote a cookbook about her work in food.
In 2014, Ben and Chitra launched Brooklyn Delhi. They handmade achaar, their first product, in small batches and sold it at markets across the city where they started to gain a following.
Since then, they have won the hearts of grocery buyers and customers across the country with their flavors. To this day, Chitra continues to develop all Brooklyn Delhi recipes and Ben still designs the packaging.
As Brooklyn Delhi has grown so has Chitra & Ben's family. The future is bright.
